Once and a while you come across a hotel that is not just a place to stay and sleep but a place to become increasingly obsessed with within the first 40 minutes you're there. You can't blame me. There are golden anchors dangling from balconies, pewter tubs you could drown in in every room with bubble bath and roses all around, the warmest coziest white towels everywhere you look, movie selections, an outdoor light wood patio surrounded by vines looking out into the industrial remanence of the sky at sundown. The bed.... I can't even get near it because i am 100% sure that if i put one foot on it i'll sleep for a week straight. There is a bright white tiled shower that feels like you're standing in the middle of a tropical storm naked. Washing yourself with coconut & vanilla shampoo. The door to our room leads straight downstairs to the back door of the Pub. Since 1841, The Fox and Anchor is tucked away on a beautiful ancient English street, cobbled and uneven and welcoming to everyone.

There will be many more posts about this magical Pub and Hotel but let me start out with their side of the story, and that is the story of the fox and the anchor:

There are times when you tire of the chase and your surroundings. The fox was no different. Charging from wood to glade, never able to take in nature's treasures, the endless fight with chicken wire and fence, the dodging of buckshot and hound. It was clearly time to make a sly change - A warmer climate, maybe the feel of sand underpaw, or to lands where the sunsets burned as rusty red as his coat. He thought of asking the geese, but thought better of it. They had history. Despite being an average swimmer he followed the river downstream to the sea, trickle became torrent and the fox thought he would surely be a gonner. Sodden, wringing wet through and beyond the point-of-no-return, he abruptly felt himself hoisted out of the water by the anchor of a passing cargo ship en-route for the Azores. Given a warm bed and just the sustenance he had been waiting for, the fox had finally found a retreat where he was never hounded and the fowl ran free. You see, if you're determined, you'll always find aweigh.

Just got internet access for the first time! Am having so much fun and taking lots of pictures. Wow you really need to speak French well to get around in Cannes....it's been interesting. Spent one night in London which was beautiful like a fairy tale, took the train to Paris and stayed at the Bel Ami Hotel and ate at the famous Cafe on the corner. Went to Laduree and had Macarons for breakfast. Took a train to Cannes and spotted ancient castles hiding in the hills as we went through the countryside. This morning we walked to the festival and then had lunch at the Carlton, a ridiculously opulent hotel on the coast. I wore a polka dot bikini top and a tennis skirt and stared at all the women with dark tans and oversized diamonds. Tonight we are going to lay on the beach and watch Jane Fonda movies next to the ocean.

How can I get all of these?

Just having fun at home with little things around my house. Or Anton's house is more like it. Listening to Ace of Base and watching Harry Potter. Planning trip to France and am so very excited.
I made a blanket fort with crisp white down covers and am eating chocolate from Bottega Louie while looking at overly-expensive hotels in Cannes for fun.

Pink Chocolate Bars from Bottega Louie, my favorite restaurant in downtown Los Angeles.
It's huge white marble with crown molding and gold shelves of pastel pastries & every french item you could ever want. During the day the sunlight floods in through the huge windows and you can sit at a little shiny table and order the most beautiful lunches and draw or read...or drink. At night it becomes quite packed with loud people, dressed in banker suits, girls in pretty dresses and you have to fight for a table but it's ALWAYS worth it.

I came home to find a big box on my doorstep the other day...there is nothing that can make me happier than recieving actual mail. Dont' you think? One of my very best friends had sent me a box all the way from Nashville totally out of the blue. It felt like tiny Christmas. My hometown is Santa Barbara, one of my favorite places to visit. My boyfriend and I took the train up the coast way too early in the morning, got off with our massive suitcases (packed for one day's vacation) and walked straight to a bar. We took my parents dog Darwin for a walk on the beach and gave him a bath. On the way home he stuck his head out the window and fell asleep. Ahhh so cute. We got stuck at the train station and I pretended to rent a car and then we went to another bar with our suitcases (again). We ended up taking the train at midnight and you could see all the stars from our tiny carriage room. So beautiful, it was straight out of a movie. The moon reflected off the ocean and everything was dark dark blue. I didn't take any pictures of it, but I will next time, because I plan to take a lot of midnight train trips now.

By the spring of 1971, the Rolling Stones, who owed more taxes than they could pay, left England before the government would seize their assets. Mick Jagger settled in Paris with his new bride Bianca, and guitarist Keith Richards rented a luxurious villa, Nellcote, in Villefranche-sur-Mer near Nice. The other members settled in various places in the south of France. After unsuccessfully looking for a recording studio in France that would be suitable for the next Rolling Stones album, it was decided they would record at Nellcôte using the band's remote recording truck brought in from England.

With visitors to Nellcôte including Gram Parsons and Hunter S Thompson, the consumption of narcotics was never going to be anything other than enthusiastic. One of those visitors was a young Frenchman called Dominique Tarle, whose photographs documented the goings on during the recording on one of the greatest rock albums of all time. He was invited by Richards to stay with them at Villa Nellcote, and ended up living there for 6 months.

Indian Canyon

Discovered a hidden canyon in Palm Springs this weekend that used to be an Indian reservation. It was raining and there was a huge rainbow over the mountains the entire day. It was freezing, even though it looks warm. The wind almost blew me off the cliff. There was a trading post with turquoise rings and feathers and I bought a tiny coyote figurine.

Next time I want to go when it's warm and wear moccasins and get lost in the palm trees.
